First of all, I want to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous NEW YEAR.  It’s hard to believe that 2018 is already here.  Wow, it seems like 2017 just flew by on supersonic wings . . .

I also want to welcome you to my first blog for 2018, the first of many more for the year.  This first post features artisan handmade items from Indiemade friends.  I randomly chose the theme as “Second Page, Third Item,” so, as of yesterday (when I chose the items), each pick is the third item on the second page in the shops featured.  As you can see, a wide variety of items are highlighted.  If something catches your eye and you want more information, please be sure to either click the photo or the link below each photo to be taken to the item.  Enjoy!

Winter White - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

Tomorrow officially ushers in the Winter Solstice, first day of winter, at 9:28 a.m. here in Central Mountain Time.  Wintery weather has already frigid cold, ice and snow to many parts of the United States, with more predicted that will probably affect some Christmas travel.  We actually had an unexpected snowfall here in the Desert Southwest on December 7!  What started out as light rain turned into big, beautiful snowflakes falling out of the sky.  But by the late afternoon, most of the snow had already melted with the exception of the highest peaks of the Franklin Mountains.

Christmas Green - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

Green and red are colors that have been closely associated with Christmas for centuries..  Last week I shared how red became a Christmas color.  You can read that post here:  Christmas Red.  This week, green, the other Christmas color, is explored mainly through the symbolism of holly, mistletoe and evergreen trees.

Christmas Red - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

As everyone is aware, the color combination of red and green is closely associated with the Christmas season.  From ancient history to modern time, color has been an integral part of cultural awareness and even an understanding of life.  The meaning of colors touched all members of society, conveying deep messages that everyone could “read”:  at one time, only royalty could wear the color purple and the red robes worn by Catholic Cardinals signifies the blood of Christ, even to this day.  The red and green color combination can be traced to the Mabinogion, a collection of Welsh stories from the 13th century.  And these stories were most likely based on an oral tradition that dates back to the pre-Christian Celts many centuries before where a half-red, half-green tree figures prominently in one of the tales.  In pre-Christian times, red represented male strength and desire and green represented female harmony and fertility.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

It’s amazing how often my blogs are inspired by music.  As you have probably noticed, music is, and always has been, a huge part of my life.  For some reason, I have been listening quite a bit to the complete soundtrack to the Lord of the Rings movies.  Heroic music for an awesome trilogy!  It ended (for the umpteenth time) and I switched to my Pandora station.  And . . . Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen started the mix of music.  The song, which was released in 1975, instantly took me back to a time at university when several friends and I developed a Bohemian Rhapsody skit . . . and performed it at a university talent show!  Am sure the skit was absolutely, undeniably horrible.  But whenever I hear the song, it takes me back to all the hard work and laughter as we pulled the antics of the skit together.  Am sure there is a photo or two around, but I have no idea where they are.

First Page, Last Handmade Item - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

I always love to do random type blog posts, posts that don’t have a specific theme, like “flowers, “autumn” or based on a quote.  For this post, I chose “First Page, Last Handmade Item” (as of when this blog was written),” a random pick of artisan handmade creations, the last item on the first page.  Despite not having a specific theme, the handmade items from Indiemade artist friends always showcase a wide range of extraordinary talent.  If an item catches your eye, either click on the photo or the live link beneath the photo to be taken to the item in the shop.  There you will find more information and photos.  I hope you enjoy these last handmade items found on the first page:

Radiant Rainbows! - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

The monsoon season is still going on here in the Desert Southwest.  Most every afternoon, the sky clouds, the wind starts to howl, thunder can be heard and lightning seen . . . and if we are lucky, rain falls.  As happens so often here, our house can get a deluge but a friend just a few block away may only get a few sprinkles.  If the rain ends at just the right time, a magical rainbow can be seen towards the east.  Sometimes a paler secondary - or even very pale triple - rainbow forms.  A colorful, visual gift!  The photo above shows part of a double rainbow (that tried to turn into a triple rainbow).  At the end of this post is a single rainbow, both taken with my trusty camera.
