A Moment of Zen - Three for Thursday

Anyone who knows me well knows that I love to garden, mainly growing flowers. There is something so gloriously fundamental about putting my hands in the living soil and planting something that will benefit bees, butterflies and/or hummingbirds (my way to decide what to plant - plus drought tolerance once established is a must since we live in the Chihuahuan Desert). Planting and tending to the plants is my meditation and I experience many moments of Zen when I feel deeply connected to myself, to others and to Mother Earth.
Just what is “Zen?” It’s to explain, especially when it is often tossed around so carelessly in popular culture (maybe like I just did above). Zen is an authentic spiritual tradition, a path to an awakening: awakening to / realizing who we really are, and awakening the aspiration to serve others and take responsibility for all of life. Zen is believed to be our true nature expressing itself moment by moment.

The Christmas shopping season will soon be here (if you haven’t already begun your list making and your shopping!). I’ve been working hard to list new pairs of earrings and necklaces in my Shadow Dog Designs handmade jewelry shop and wanted to share the new creations with you. Each piece is a perfect gift for the discerning woman who enjoys wearing truly unique artisan handmade jewelry. With the exception of two of the Christmas earrings at the end of the post, all of the jewelry designs are one of a kind pieces. I certainly agree with all three of these reasons. Why buy mass produced items - your neighbor next door can be wearing the exact same thing - when you can buy handmade, which can be one of a kind, and only YOU own it!

Lately, the days just seem to drift one into the other and I sometimes don’t remember which day it is. Like today! Since I have a whole host of arts festivals to participate in this fall, I was creating some new jewelry late this afternoon. Then I suddenly realized it was Tuesday . . . and I needed to pull together a Wonderful Handmade Wednesday blog. Yikes! But never fear, it got done. With the help of my trusty “numbers bowl,” today’s theme is “First Page, Fifth Item” (as of when the items were added). I always enjoy browsing through the handmade shops of artist friends. So much talent and such creativity! This week’s Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade features the first item in each shop (as of when this blog was being worked on) featured here: First In the Shop. Oftentimes the first item is the newest - sometimes it’s not. Either way, the items are all wonderful and each will fill that need for a gift perfectly.

The 4th of July, also known as Independence Day or July 4th, has a tradition of celebrations goes back to the American Revolution. When the initial battles of the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, very few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain. But, by the middle of the following year, the idea of independence grew due to the growing hostility against draconian British laws and the spread of revolutionary sentiments, such as the pamphlet published in early 1776 by Thomas Paine, called “Common Sense.”
