Autumn Oranges and Browns - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

Even though the temperatures are still getting in the upper-80's to mid-90's here in the Borderlands region, the nights are dropping down into the mid-60's at night.  Autumn is definitely in the air!  I have noticed some of the leaves on some of the bushy sumac trees are beginning to turn.  Due to lack of rain or the shorter days?  Probably both.  But it is nice to see the slide into my favorite time of the year.

Tantalizing Turquoise Blue - Artisan Handmade Creations

Turquoise is a color, in all its glorious shades from light to dark, that is greatly beloved by most people.  It is a combination of blue with a small amount of yellow, fitting in the color scale between blue and green.   In color psychology, turquoise is used to heal the emotions, creating emotional balance and stability.  It seems to radiate peace, calm and tranquility coupled with an uplifting quality.  Metaphysically, if it is a favorite color, you are said to be seeking spiritual fulfillment and are often seen as evolved or an “old” soul.

First Handmade Item, Second Page - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

I just got back from a week stay in Dallas yesterday afternoon, a long 10 hour drive with my four-footed copilot, Seamus.  As you can probably imagine, the city is still reeling due to the sniper who shot and killed five policemen during a peaceful rally.  Residents of Dallas kept apologizing to me for what happened.  Many are truly grieving at the insult.  I told most of them that there was no need to apologize - that with the crazy world we live in now, the shooting could have taken place anywhere . . . unfortunately.  My heart and soul goes out to the families that are left behind and to the policemen and other people who are left dealing with the horrible aftermath.  And my heart and soul goes out to the families of Philando Castile, Alton Sterling and the many others around the nation who have been unjustly shot and killed by the very men who are supposed to be there to protect us.

A Bounty of Beautiful Handmade Bracelets

Right behind earrings, bracelets are one of the most popular forms of body adornment.  The origin of the term "bracelet" is from the Greek word "brachile" meaning "of the arm."  The earliest identified bracelet was discovered in 2008 by Russian archaeologist in Denisova Cave in the Atai Mountains of Siberia.  A finger bone fragment was found along with other artifacts, including a beautiful bracelet created from polished green stone.  The items were carbon dated to around 40,000 years ago.

Captivating Czech Glass - A Short History

Czech glass is so much fun to use in handmade jewelry designs due to the extremely large choice of shapes, sizes, colors and finishes.  I have to admit . . . I have become addicted to the beauties.  I enjoy using Czech glass mainly for earrings, but many people use the glass beads for necklaces, bracelets and many other projects.  Czech glass has a long, rich history which I find extremely fascinating.  I thought I would share a short history of Czech glass and some handmade jewelry designs from artists using Czech glass as a main design component.

The Wearing of the Green - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade

Since my family has a LOT of Scots Irish in them, I grew up listening to Irish ballads and bagpipe music.  St. Patrick's Day has always been a favorite celebration (although no watered down green beer for us - had to do it right with Guinness Stout!).  St. Patrick's Day was also celebrated as the start of the spring planting season for gardens and flower beds. Since Ireland is supposed to have forty shades of green, the start of planting season always seemed very appropriate.

The Eastern Sun, A Love Song - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday

I feel I have been walking on a cloud ever since my husband and I snagged tickets to see Justin Hayward in Austin, Texas, in June.  For those who aren’t familiar with his name, you will certainly recognize his voice from Moody Blues songs such as "Nights in White Satin", "Your Wildest Dreams", "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Question".  I have been a Moody Blues fan since around 1970 and have had the privilege to see them many, many times from when the original five toured to the scaled down version of just three Moodies when they passed through here two years ago.  But this will be the first time seeing Justin solo. Shhhh . . . this is just between you and me and please don't tell my husband (although I'm pretty sure he knows) I have been madly in love with Justin since I first saw the Moody Blues in concert those many years ago.

Just Who Is "Shadow Dog Designs?"

My name is Catherine and I create unique, mostly one-of-a-kind jewelry using semi-precious stones and sterling silver. But I also love to integrate bone, copper, brass, polymer clay, lampwork and many other different non-stone components in my handmade work. Also incorporated into many designs are pendants and beads from my wide range of artist friends, making a piece designed with them that much extra special.  I have fun “working” at what I love!
