Flora and Fauna - Artisan Handmade

The Earth is such a beautiful place to live on, if we just take the time to look and observe.  No matter where we go, unique plants and animals can be found, two very important parts of any ecosystem.  I’ve been lucky to have lived in many places and many different ecosystems, from Central Texas to North Carolina, from near Georgian Bay in Canada to a forest in Northern Virginia, from North Texas to an island in South Carolina.  Now I live in the gorgeous Desert Southwest.  The flora and fauna of each place was awe-inspiring - some the same but, most often, very different.  Since I love what Mother Nature has to offer, I find it all VERY, VERY interesting and want to keep on learning about how our wonderful Earth functions . . . and what we need to do to heal it.

What is "flora" and "fauna?"  Both “flora” and “fauna” have their origins from Latin. Flora signifies the goddess of flowers and plants, a symbol of nature and fertility in Roman mythology.  Today, it refers to all the plant species that exist in this world, but more specifically to a group of plants found in an ecosystem in a distinct geographical location at a specific time.  It includes the indigenous native species of plants, but also, due to human intervention, the new species of plants and trees that have been introduced (such as food crops) or have invaded the area from another ecosystem.  Sadly, a large number of flora species are at risk due to habitat changes, climate change, diseases and pests of all kinds.

Fauna” is about animal life.  According to Roman mythology, Fauna refers to the goddess of fertility, the wife / sister / daughter of Faunus, which was the horned god of the forest, plains and fields.  Romans believed that this goddess nurtured all the living creatures in the world.  Today, the term is used to describe a group of indigenous animals of any geographical region at a specific time.  To further break down animals into classes for ease of discussion, “fauna” is often added to the end of a word.  For example, megafauna refers to large animals, avifauna is a term given to birds, piscifauna includes all types of fish, cryofauna are animals that live very close to ice, microfauna represents all microorganisms, etc.  Unfortunately, according to a new UN report, approximately one million species of fauna, from microscopic to large, are also at risk for becoming extinct, primarily due to reckless human activity.

Flora and fauna serve as an integral part of our ecosystem - every living creature plays a distinctive role to support life on earth.  Maintaining a natural balance is essential for the survival of the ecosystem. Mankind definitely needs to reconsider its attitude towards nature for the survival of life on earth.  Let's hope we don't wait too long . . .

Because of my deep love for the flora and fauna of the Earth - and the extreme worry I feel - I decided that plants and animals would be the theme of this blog.  Featured are handmade beauties from artist friends that feature flora and/or fauna.  I hope you enjoy the handmade goodies and will visit the shops of the artists.
