Ravishing Reds - Wonderful Handmade Wednesday on Indiemade - June 17, 2015

If you have ever been entranced by a red rose, or loved a favorite red dress (I had several!), or cussed at having to stop at a red light, you have associated with a word that has been around since long before ancient Egyptians started building pyramids.  In fact, linguists suspect the word red came from Proto-Indo-European (PIE) word reudh and has been in use in one form or another for close to 6500 years.  Linguists believe PIE is the common root language from which English, Hindi, Greek and all Indo-European languages formed, first spoken those many millennia ago on the Russian steppes.  I like to think that the word red is a link to some of our most ancient ancestors who spoke a “real” language.  The spelling of the modern English word is a direct descendant of the Old English version, read. In fact, when you say names like Reed, Read or Reid, you’re speaking Old English, and they all mean . . . red!

I have to admit that red is my all time favorite color. It always has been as far as I can remember. My first memory of an article of clothing is a "pweddy wed dwess" that I never wanted to take off. (Now, I'm sure I enunciated "pretty red dress" very clearly back then and the Elmer Fudd pronunciation is only a family legend!). That being said, I want to share ravishing red handmade creations from the shops of Indiemade artist friends. Some have in your face red; some accents. All are . . . well . . . ravishing!

Great Read

Love all these reds! You chose a great selection of reds for us to enjoy. While red is not my color, I can appreciate it and long ago, I had a pair of red heels and a red and black dress that was slightly "hot". :) Great read or should I say great red? Shared

Thank you, Julie and Blu!

Red is one of my favorite colors. Your choice of red is just perfect . Red puts forth a bold energy that allows us to get things done and move forward! Love all the wonderful handmades in this Ravishing Red group. Thanks so much for including my little red peruvian woven bracelet!

Thank you, Carmon!

Nothing "little" about your bracelet, Carmon! Am glad you are a red lover, too! Many thanks for your comments and shares.

Oh man!

I feel like I really missed out! As a kid, I was always told to stay away from reds because they didn't go with my...you guessed it. Gingerlocks. Then I entered my rebellious phase and didn't care. Still, I lean more toward the orangy-reds because I still think I'll, what, melt? get shunned? if I wear 'that color.' I read with interested about these reds, Catherine, and thank you for the scintillating info as well as including one of my veddy red wristlets!

Wonderful Reds!

As always, a very interesting and informative post - and lots of great red creations to admire! Penny and I thank you for including our red, white and blue dog bandana!
