El Paso Artists Studio Tour 2019

 

 

 

The 12th Annual El Paso Artists Studio Tour will soon be here.  Over 40 artists at 19 studios will participate, bringing unique art to art lovers . . . and also food, drink, and in some instances, entertainment.   The Studio Tour takes place over the course of two weekends:

 

  • El Paso’s  Westside and Upper Valley is Saturday, April 27 (10 am - 5 pm) and Sunday, April 28 (noon - 5 pm).

  • El Paso’s East, Central, Downton, Northeast and Mission Valley is Saturday, May 4 (10 am - 5 pm) and Sunday, May 5 (noon - 5 pm).

Luther Burbank


 

I love this quote from Luther Burbank because it’s true!  For those who are not familiar with Luther Burbank, he was an American botanist, horticulturist and pioneer in agricultural science, developing more than 800 strains and varieties of plants during his lifetime, including the tasy plumcot (fruit trees being a special passion of his, it seems).  One of my favorite things to do doing the winter months was to constantly browse through Stark Bro's and Burpee Seed Co catalogues (both companies sold quite a few of Burbanks’ seeds and plants after his death), planning my flower beds and vegetable gardens. Looking at the brilliant pictures and dreaming of all the flowers and veggies spring, summer and fall would bring made those winters quite a bit easier to bear.  Even now, living in the Desert Southwest where the winters are mild in comparison, I still dream of the promise of flowers.

More than usual this year, I have been drawn to Christmas / Yule art, especially those pieces with an Old World feeling and those with animals.  It's even better when St. Nick or and angle has an animals with him/her! I have pinned quite a few Christmas beauties on a couple of my Pinterest boards.  After browsing them, I decided to share a few with you. I’ve included the artist’s name and/or link - only fair. There is something ALL handmade artists go through:  you design a beautiful piece of jewelry, or create a fabulous painting, or crochet an intricate piece of table art, or . . . the list goes on and on.  You have put so much of yourself into the piece, you love it and you are sure it will sell very, very quickly. Unfortunately, there it still sits in your shop . . . and you have no idea why!

The 4th of July, also known as Independence Day or July 4th, has a tradition of celebrations goes back to the American Revolution.  When the initial battles of the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, very few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain.  But, by the middle of the following year, the idea of independence grew due to the growing hostility against draconian British laws and the spread of revolutionary sentiments, such as the pamphlet published in early 1776 by Thomas Paine, called “Common Sense.”

Every February 14, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones in several countries, all in the name of St. Valentine. The history of Valentine’s Day contains remnants of both Christian and ancient Roman traditions.  The patron saint himself is shrouded in mystery.  Who is this mysterious Valentine?  Where did traditions associated with Valentine’s Day come from?  Being of inquiring mind, I did some research and decided to share my findings, along with a whole host of artisan handmade items, each one a perfect Valentine’s Day gift for a loved one:
