Roses in the Desert (with an Iris)

When we moved to the Desert Southwest, I was amazed to see how well roses thrive here, pretty much pest free.  Most of the roses I have dealt with were when my husband and I lived on the east coast. There the roses were constantly having to be sprayed to try to ward off all sorts of pests and diseases:  black spot, powdery mildew, hordes of aphids, armies of Japanese beetles, etc. etc.. Since I try to go organic whenever possible, I did grow roses, but they were the very hardy “nearly wilds” and rugosas.  I did occasionally have to spray them but always with an earth friendly solution.  So it has been a real pleasure to see all the roses grown here.  I, myself, have three in large pots that are blooming up a storm right now.

My friend Julia has the most amazing rose garden in her backyard, with a few in the front.  Unfortunately, when her roses are at their peak bloom (right now), she is in Bolivia for an extended stay to visit family and friends.  Before she left, I told her I’d go to her house and take some photos of her rose babies (and an iris at ehr front door). Not the same, I know, but at least Julia can see how much beauty her roses are bringing to me and to others who water her flowers.  I just wish there was the ability for a scratch and sniff for each photo so she can enjoy the heavenly perfume, as well.

Julia . . . these are for you!  I hope you enjoy them.

Roses

Hi Catherine....Thank you for the rose tour. We have been having lots of gray and cold days...rain, of course, so I needed that bright and happy break. I love roses. I think I saw Tropicana in her selection. Always a beauty. Also, the cream with pink blush on the edges is my all time fave. I had one years ago and loved it. Darn!! I just can't remember her name.
Your photos are excellent. Take care.

Sue
