Not something you see every day, the brown septarian pendant used as the focal of the SEA SPRITE handmade necklace is ancient and beautifully unique. Creamy riverstone and pewter beads highlight the pendant perfectly. Just what is brown septarian? Simply, septarian nodules were formed during the Cretaceous period, around 50-70 million years ago. Because of periodic volcanic eruptions, smaller sea life was killed, sank to the seabed and started to decompose. Due to the minerals in the shells, seafloor sediments accumulated around the dead sea life and formed nodules or mud balls. When the ancient seas receded, the fossilized mud balls dried out, began to shrink and crack into beautiful patterns. Over eons, the minerals calcite, aragonite and limestone replaced the mud. Septarian shaped like the one used in this necklace is sometimes referred to as “septarian dinosaur eggs.”

The brown septarian pendant is mostly a shiny medium brown, oval in shape. It has two lovely sections of patterning, created when the ancient mud cracked and was then replaced by calcite. The off white lines flow from end to end of the pendant and contrast sharply with the brown background. As an added bonus, when you look closely at the photos, you can see some pale green mineralization in with the white. Two sizes of sterling silver daisy spacers cap the top and bottom of the pendant.

To bring out the fossilized white “cracks,” small, creamy white riverstone rounds make up the main body of the gemstone necklace. Pewter lantern beads flanked on each side by sterling silver beads were scattered through the riverstone. To finish the necklace, a 1“ / 2.54 cm sterling silver extender chain with a riverstone dangle at the end and a simple sterling silver hook clasp were used.
