The beautiful, one of a kind MAUA tribal-inspiredI necklace feeds into your boho side of life but with a definite sophisticated flair. Created with dark brown and white African batik bone flower beads, the handmade necklace also features glowing white potato pearls and sterling silver. Bought Fair Trade from a co-op of women artists in Ghana, seven two-sided batik bone discs are found on the front of the necklace. A white flower design on both sides is highlighted by a dark brown (almost black) background. Since the disc beads are individually hand crafted, they are similar but not not exactly the same in size and design. To find out more about these lovely beads are made, please scroll down.
Perfectly complementing the batik bone flower discs are white potato pearls with an amazing sheen. “Potato pearls” get their name since they have an organic, not perfectly spherical shape, each different from the other. Sterling silver beads and sterling daisy spacers separate the bone discs from the pearls. A sterling silver s-clasp with a flower design securely finishes the unique tribal necklace. Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the MAUA necklace was created for the woman who loves tribal-inspired jewelry with a sophisticated vibe. “Maua” is Swahili for “flowers.”

Traditionally, bone is said to bring good fortune, strength and wisdom. Flowers are a symbol of spiritual awakening; they also are symbols of generosity and love when they are given away. Pearls are used to spread loving vibrations; they promote sincerity, truth and loyalty. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.
*** How batik bone beads are made:
The batik bone beads used in MAUA necklace are so unique - even more so when you understand the process of creating them. Most bone beads are made in Ghana and Kenya. "Batik" is traditionally a method of dyeing fabric where a clear wax design is applied to the material. When the material is dyed, the wax repels most of the color. This same technique is used on bleached cow or buffalo bone, usually using hot beeswax because of its extreme resistance to dye. After a pattern is painted with the hot beeswax, the bone is soaked in the dye. Most dyes used are made from natural sources: leaves, tree bark and/or sap. Bone beads are left in the dye bath a varying length of time depending on how dark the beads need to be. Once the desired darkness is reached, the bead is dried, the wax is scraped off and it is carefully polished. Each bead is made this way, a very laborious process from beginning to end. But this process makes each and every bead unique.
The MAUA necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio. The necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
