Vintage Kuchi Coin Necklace, Red Coral Afghan Tribal Handmade Jewelry

Item Description

For thousands of years coins have been used the world over to show wealth by decorating clothing and being worn as jewelry and other adornments.  The unique TRAVELER handmade necklace features a vintage mixed metal and opaque red glass Kuchi coin pendant handcrafted in Afghanistan. Just imagine the artist who originally fashioned the tribal pendant.  How many hands did the pendant have to pass through and the distance it had to travel to end up as the beautiful focal on this particular necklace! To perfectly highlight the Kuchi pendant, red coral oval shaped beads were used, along with pewter hexagon beads and sterling silver. Created for the woman who adores wearing unique ethnic inspired jewelry, the one of a kind TRAVELER necklace was carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs.

Like all tribal jewelry, Kuchi jewelry is rich with the influences of many cultures.  Beautiful pieces with colorful glass jewels, the jewelry originally was crafted by nomadic Pashtoon tribes that, according to the seasons, wandered the border areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan along ancient routes.  The word “Kuchi” itself is derived from a Persian word meaning “migration,” referring to nomads or gypsies and does not describe a particular people.

The amazing pendant used in the TRAVELER handmade necklace is a genuine, tribally used vintage coin from Afghanistan that has been softened and patinated with age, reflecting its long use.  The front of the Afghani silver coin (probably silver plated or mixed silver colored metal) was set horizontally in a brass bezel with an opaque red glass oval cabochon that resembles red coral. A raised laurel branch design decorates the edge of the coin. The back shows a high rise building, a pair of clasped hands and a single story building.  Flowing Arabic calligraphy edges the top half of the coin while a gear design edges the bottom half. A soldered bronze bail connects the coin pendant to the main body of the necklace. As you can see in the photos, the coin pendant is not “perfect” but rather shows the wear of a valued piece of tribal jewelry.

Since the opaque red glass cabochon set in the center of the coin greatly resembles red coral, red coral (dyed) oval beads were used.  The finish of the red coral is not high gloss but also not matte - it is something in between and imparts a warm glow to the overall necklace design.  Eight lead free pewter hexagon beads, four on each side, were used to separate each group of red coral ovals. A single small sterling silver bead was used on each side of the hexagons to add even more silvery gleam and to provide a sinuous drape to the necklace. To perfectly finish the TRAVELER tribal necklace, a textured sterling silver hook clasp set was used.

Red Coral is used to help calm life, to restore harmony in the event of an emotional conflict.  Even though man made, glass is said to carry the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication.  Pewter is believed to be very grounding, bringing the wearer back to reality. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The TRAVELER one of a kind necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio.  The necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
