Vintage Flower Pendant Amber Necklace, Turquoise Handmade Jewelry Gift

Item Description

The big and bold FLOWER AND SUNSHINE handmade necklace is truly an eye catcher - a special piece of jewelry that seems to capture sunlight.  Created with a unique vintage brass flower pendant focal, the one of a kind necklace also includes golden pyramid shaped pressed amber, turquoise and copper.  The pendant was made in India out of solid brass and was used for trade in Africa (it was collected in Ghana).  In the center of the glowing pendant is an encircled, multi-petaled flower raised against the background.  It is surrounded by raised dots, adding wonderful texture to the pendant design.  The raised areas are polished while the recessed areas have a darker patina to bring out the lovely details of the pendant.  The back of the pendant is smooth and very slightly concave.

+++ Before I go on with the necklace’s description, here is a bit about amber.  Actually fossilized tree resin (not sap as is commonly thought), amber is between 30 - 90 million years old and is one of the few gemstones that is not a "rock".  It comes in a variety of colors, from almost black to white, but the most common colors are shades of yellow.  Most people don't realize it, but a huge majority of amber is not natural.  To be called "natural" amber, the amber cannot have any processes done to it other than carving, sanding and polishing.  Most amber today has been heat treated to change its color and / or melted and reformed.  These are still considered real amber but are not "natural".  Unfortunately, there are many resin and plastic amber beads today that are being passed off as natural or real amber.  Ancient people believed that amber captured sunlight which is why it glowed.

The amber used in the FLOWER AND SUNSHINE handmade necklace was melted, had tiny air bubbles injected and then pressed (reformed) into unique pyramid shaped beads, flat on the bottom and pointed at the top with three sides.  Since it was reformed, the amber is REAL, but is NOT natural amber.  Two colors of translucent amber were used:  the majority is a glowing golden color but flecks here and there of a dark brown amber were also included.  Air bubbles were then injected as the amber was still warm; once the amber solidified, the bubbles were trapped.  Because of the bubbles, the pressed amber glistens as the light refracts when passing through each piece.  There is a constant sparkle as the angle of the light changes, each piece of amber is different with the amount and placement of the air bubbles.  Please see photo #5 for a close up of the pressed amber barrels.  As you can see in the photos, the tips of the pyramid shaped amber gemstones face towards each other, as do the flat bottoms.

To perfectly highlight the amber, genuine turquoise rondelles were placed between each piece of amber.  The earthy colors of the turquoise range from a turquoise blue through greens, beiges and dark brown, many rondelles having more than one color.  A small copper bead separates the rondelles from the amber to give the necklace a sinuous drape.  Three turquoise beads finish the back of each side of the necklace.  A patterned copper toggle clasp securely fastens the necklace.  Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the FLOWER AND SUNSHINE necklace will radiate goodness each and every time it is worn and will quickly become a favorite for the woman who is lucky enough to own the beauty.

Through the centuries, flowers have been a symbol of spiritual awakening; they are symbols of generosity and love when they’re given away.  Bronze is said to bring great calmness and deep meaningful thoughts, leading to a far greater insight into life’s problems.  Amber is used as a good luck and protective stone; it is said to bring wisdom, energy and balance to life.  Turquoise, a gemstone sacred to the Navajo, Zuni and other Native Americans, is a stone of wholeness, promoting a sense of unity with all that surrounds us; it is said to bring peace of mind, a soothing energy and healing of the spirit.  Copper is believed to allow the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development.

The FLOWER AND SUNSHINE brass flower pendant necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio.  The necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals.
