Sun Symbol Petroglyph Earrings, Lampwork Lightweight Handmade Jewelry

Item Description

Filled with the wonder of ancient symbolism, the TAWA handmade earrings are a perfect jewelry gift for the woman who loves the petroglyph magic of the Desert Southwest.  These one of a kind, lightweight beauties feature artisan polymer clay sun sign dangles, artisan lampwork glass beads, copper and sterling silver.  Inspired by indigenous petroglyphs found on canyon walls and caves in the Four Corners area, each rustic dangle has a half sun design carved into textured white polymer clay, similar in design but also a bit different.  With a mirror-like design, the suns have three inner circles, one with dots, and expanding from the outer circle. multiple rays ending in dots,.  After the dangles were cured, several layers of earthy desert colored pigments in oranges, reddish-browns and sage greens were added for an aged look. A polymer clay sealer was applied to keep the colors bright for years to come. The backsides of the slightly curved dangles are also painted and inscribed with the artist’s mark, a spiral P.  These earrings are big and bold - despite that, they are very lightweight to wear due to the polymer clay.
Perfectly complementing the dangles are lampwork glass beads, also individually artisan made.  Starting out with a base of mellow orange glass, a whisper of grayish green rays or feathers were added, allowing the orange to show through.  Two copper flower shaped spacers were added on top of each lampwork bead, along with a smooth copper bead and a ridged copper bead.  Sterling silver French hook earwires with copper bead accents finish the unique earrings.  Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the TAWA sun symbol earrings are a wonderful gift for the woman who loves big and bold earrings and is fascinated with the talismanic mystery of petroglyphs. “Tawa” is Hopi for “sun” or "sun god."

The sun symbolizes abundance with its life-giving warmth, radiating healing and peace; it also represents energy, power, positivity and clarity.  Although man made, glass is said to carry the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication.  Copper is said to allow the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The TAWA artisan earrings were carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio. They will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag with tissue, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
