Sugar Skulls Earrings, Day of the Dead Halloween Handmade Jewelry Gift

Item Description

Very trendy and full of marvelous spooky fun, the handmade LAS CALAVERAS sugar skull earrings are perfect for Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) parties, Halloween wear - or for any time of the year you have a need to wear skull jewelry!  The unique dangle earrings feature two-sided beads created with a base of opaque white Czech glass impressed with a sugar skull design. For an aged, folk art look, a black Picasso finish was added to highlight the incredible details of the floral eyes, an inverted heart shaped nose, the grinning mouth and other parts of the skull beads.  As you can see in the photos, the skulls are a bit different on each side. Since the sugar skull earrings are two sided, they look beautiful from any angle.
Stacked above the sugar skull beads are glittering Czech crystal and silver rondelles.  The seven clear crystals set in the rondelles have a colorful rainbow aurora borealis finish which catches the light and causes a cascade of sparkling goodness when the earrings are worn.  To add even more sparkle and a touch of lovely color, snugged into the top of each rondelle is a faceted Swarovski crystal bicone in a “rose” pink color. Sterling silver French hook earwires  professionally finish the earrings. Created for the woman who wants to add ghoulishly fun jewelry to her unique Dia de los Muertos or Halloween skull collection, the LAS CALAVERAS earrings were carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs.  “Las Calaveras” is Spanish for “skulls.”

Historians estimate the traditions and rituals associated with Día de los Muertos date back 2,500 to 3,000 years to the indigenous cultures of Mexico. In most regions of Mexico, November 1st honors the passing of infants and children. known as Día de los Inocentes (Day of the Innocents). November 2nd is when the passing of adults is celebrated and is known as Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). On these days, family members and friends travel to cemeteries to clean the graves of deceased.  Homage is payed to the souls with colorful ofrendas (altars) that are filled with offerings of favorite foods and beverages, pan de muerto (Day of the Dead breads), candies (often in the shape of skulls), candles, incense, cempazuchitl (wild marigolds), photos of the deceased and other items from the past. Family and friends may also tell stories, which are usually funny and lighthearted. Death is often mocked since it is accepted as part of everyday. A departed loved one is mourned but the death is also celebrated with happiness and joy.

Skulls are believed to ward off evil and assure protection and well being.  Even though man made, glass and crystals carry the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication.   Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is believed to be a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The LAS CALAVERAS sugar skull earrings were carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio. They will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag with tissue, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
