Sugar Skulls Earrings, Day of the Dead Halloween Enamel Coral Jewelry

Item Description

The CALAVERAS DE COLORES sugar skull earrings are so colorful, you just have to smile!  Perfect jewelry for Day of the Dead or Halloween, the one of a kind earrings feature individually artisan handmade enamel sugar skull charms and red coral rondelles.  The unique cut out Dia de los Muertos skull dangles started out as copper blanks. Shiny white enamel glass powder was fused onto the front. A stencil and more enamel glass powder was used to form the design, using a high temperature butane torch.  As you can see the colors are brilliant: red, turquoise and a bit of yellow. Two black spirals can be found just above each eye socket. Because the sugar skulls were individually hand enameled, they are very similar but not exactly the same, as the photos will show.  The back of the charms are finished in black enamel. Despite the larger size of these earrings, the unique flower earrings are lightweight to wear.
***Please note:  One of the skulls has a bit of a "gray cloud" to the left of its mouth.  Since the jewelry photos are taken with a closeup lens, the gray looks like it covers more area than it actually does.  In real life, I can hardly see the gray, even when wearing reading glasses.
Since the sugar skull charms are the main focal of the earrings, simple rich red coral rondelles were used to perfectly complement the vibrancy of the colors of the skulls.  Two coral rondelles were stacked above each skull with a patinated copper discs spacer capping the top and bottom. A single 3 mm shiny copper bead sits on top of the upper copper disc.  Small copper beads was added to the sterling silver French hooks for added beauty. Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the CALAVERAS DE COLORES lightweight dangle earrings are perfect jewelry accessories to add to your Halloween and Day of the Dead festivities.  And they are GREAT for year round wear! “Calaveras de Colores” is Spanish for “colorful skulls.”

Historians estimate the traditions and rituals associated with Día de los Muertos date back 2,500 to 3,000 years to the indigenous cultures of Mexico. In most regions of Mexico, November 1st honors the passing of infants and children. known as Día de los Inocentes (Day of the Innocents). November 2nd is when the passing of adults is celebrated and is known as Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). On these days, family members and friends travel to cemeteries to clean the graves of deceased.  Homage is payed to the souls with colorful ofrendas (altars) that are filled with offerings of favorite foods and beverages, pan de muerto (Day of the Dead breads), candies (often in the shape of skulls), candles, incense, cempazuchitl (wild marigolds), photos of the deceased and other items from the past. Family and friends may also tell stories, which are usually funny and lighthearted. Death is often mocked since it is accepted as part of everyday. A departed loved one is mourned but the death is also celebrated with happiness and joy.

Skulls are believed to ward off evil and assure protection and well being.  Red Coral is used to help calm life, to restore harmony in the event of an emotional conflict.  Copper allows the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.
