Buddhism originates in the teachings of Shakyamuni (Gautama Siddartha), born in what is now Nepal about 2,500 years ago.  Born a prince, Shakyamuni became aware of and was troubled by the problem of human suffering from a very young age.  He abandoned the secular world to search for a solution to the sufferings of life.  After his enlightenment he came to be called  Buddha (“Enlightened One”) and traveled widely throughout the Indian subcontinent sharing his wisdom, promoting peace and teaching people how to unleash the great potential of their lives.  Following Shakyamuni’s death at age 80, his teachings were recorded by disciples in the form of sutras and spread throughout Asia, teachings with an emphasis on peace and compassion.

As was mentioned above the Shakyamuni Buddha pendant used in the PEACE AND COMPASSION necklace was artisan handmade in Thailand from brass.  The brass was given a rich turquoise green patina to bring out the incredible detail of the meditating Buddha, the platform he sits on and the curved arch around him.  The pendant is two sided, the Buddha is on the front side.  On the back, which also has patina, is an inscribed Buddha’s eye symbol near the top:  the “all knowing,” “all seeing.”  Below the Buddha’s eye is script, probably a short sutra in Thai.  The pendant is connected securely to the main part of the necklace with two dark copper jump rings.

To highlight the Buddha pendant and to provide even more rustic charm, multi-colored Czech glass tube beads were used:  turquoise blue, turquoise green, rust red, mustard yellow and black.  The beads have an earthy Picasso finish of browns, blues, and grays to add a mottled, aged look.  Small copper beads separate each tube.  Between every third grouping of tubes are Czech glass melon shaped beads in a glowing ruby red color.  The melon beads also have a Picasso finish, this one in glistening metallic copper.  Separating the dark red melon beads from the glass tubes are copper disc spacers, two on each side.  A sleek copper toggle clasp set finish the PEACE AND COMPASSION necklace perfectly.

Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, an enlightened one, and is known for his teachings of peace and compassion.  Brass is said to help develop strength of spirit.  Even though it is man made, glass carries  the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication.  Copper is said to allow the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development.

The PEACE AND COMPASSION Shakyamuni Buddha pendant necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio.  The necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
