KHEPRI (pronounced "kheffer") was an ancient Egyptian sun deity that was connected to the sacred scarab beetle (kheprer). Scarabs are actually a family of beetles that roll balls of dung across the ground. Because the beetles performed an important function, Egyptians saw this as symbol of the forces that moved the sun across the sky. Every night, KHEPRI would push the sun down into the underworld. Every morning, Khepri would cause the sun to emerge and would roll it across the sky. The word "kheper" means "to emerge" or "to come into being". When the wings of a sacred scarab beetle are open, the wings are symbolic of the heavens.
The exquisite sacred scarab beetle pendant used in the KHEPRI necklace was created in the ancient Egyptian faience style, a type of ceramic that was developed more than 6,000 years ago. Usually Egyptian faience was a bright turquoise, blue or green, but softer colors can be found in matte finishes, such as is represented by the scarab here. As you can see in the photos, the scarab has wonderful detail and great texture. The color is a light, mossy green with bits of a brown wash here and there. It was produced with a matte finish. The back of the scarab pendant is flat and actually has a light matte turquoise finish.
To complement the sacred scarab beetle pendant, luminous brown copper colored freshwater pearls. the copper color plays brilliantly against the soft mossy green color of the scarab and plays up the brown wash on the pendant. As you can see in the photos above, the pearls were grouped and separated with copper disc spacers and 2 mm copper beads. Being freshwater pearls, they are not perfectly round; most are an oval shape and a few have flat spots. The color ranges from a lighter copper color to darker, some with dark brown spots. I love the elegance the pearls give the pendant, but because they aren't "perfect", they also fit the rustic feel of the scarab.
To finish the KHEPRI handmade necklace, a rope patterned copper toggle clasp set was used. It was connected to the necklace with copper wire protectors and then crimped with sterling tubes for a secure hold. Copper crimp covers that mimic 3 mm beads were used to cover the sterling tubes for a professional finish.
For a better understanding of the relative size of the scarab pendant and pearls used in the KHEPRI necklace, please be sure to check out photo #5 for a size comparison with a quarter.
The sacred scarab was seen as a symbol of the heavenly cycle, of rebirth and of regeneration. Pearls are used to spread loving vibrations; they are said to promote sincerity, truth and loyalty. Copper is said to allow the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development.
The KHEPRI handmade necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
