Combining the rustic beauty of old recycled glass beads with the elegance of white pearls, the SUNDARA HĀRA necklace is a unique beauty for the woman who adores handmade ethnic jewelry.  The one of a kind necklace features old Nepali Sherpa red orange glass rondelles with gleaming pewter floral bead caps.  The glowing semi baroque white pearls are an eye catching  juxtaposition to the Sherpa beads.  A one of a kind piece of organic jewelry that will be a perfect Valentine's Day gift, the SUNDARA HĀRA necklace was carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs.  “Sundara Hāra” is Nepali for “beautiful necklace.”

*** For a better understanding of the relative size of the Nepali Sherpa glass beads and pearls used in the SUNDARA HĀRA ethnic necklace, please be sure to check out photo # 6 for a size comparison with a quarter.

The old glass rondelles are so very unique, as you can see from the photos.  Traditionally worn in their jewelry, the beads were made made by the Sherpa in Nepal from recycled red glass with a hint of orange.  Since the nine beads were fire cured, they have a gorgeous organic, almost fire burnt, look.  Because of the handmade nature, each Sherpa bead is different in size and surface texture, some are fairly smooth and some have pitted textural surfaces.  Pewter floral bead caps clasp each side of each Sherpa bead, highlighting the rich red color.

To brilliantly complement the Nepali Sherpa glass rondelles used in the SUNDARA HĀRA handmade necklace, white freshwater pearls were used to make up the rest of the necklace.  The pearls have an amazing glow, some with an iridescent rainbow look.  Because of the rustic nature of the glass beads, pearls that are termed “semi baroque” were used.  “Semi baroque” means the pearls are not perfectly round in shape but are somewhat irregular, usually oval or with flat sides and/or bumps.  A single white pearl flanked by a small sterling silver bead on each side separates each of the nine Sherpa beads.  At the back of the necklace, each grouping of pearls is also separated by a small sterling bead.

The beautifully unique necklace is finished with a lovely sterling silver toggle clasp.

Although man made, glass is said to carry the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication.  Pearls are used to spread loving vibrations; they are said promote sincerity, truth and loyalty.  Pewter is believed to be very grounding, bringing the wearer back to reality.  Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is believed to be a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The SUNDARA HĀRA ethnic necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio.  The necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
