Quetzalcoatl Bird Earrings, Quetzal Mayan Aztec Birds Handmade Jewelry

Item Description

Filled with the wonder of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, the one of a kind QUETZAL earrings are beauties you’ll want to wear time and time again.  Created with unique artisan white copper dangles, the earrings also feature aqua opaline glass rondelles, pewter leaf bead caps, Thai Hill Tribes fine silver beads and sterling silver.  The intricate dangles were hand formed from white copper (copper with a small amount of nickel to give an old silver sheen) and imprinted with an Aztec / Mayan inspired Quetzalcoatl design. Raised against the background for incredible texture, the detailing of the bird / snake god is eye-catching with its sharp, curved beak and exquisitely flowing plumage.  The dangles were given a darker patina and then polished to bring out the details.  The white copper charms are mirror images of each other.  The backs are textured but smooth.  To find out more about Quetzalcoatl, please scroll down a bit further.
To perfectly complement the fine silver dangles, Czech glass beads, leafy bead caps, fine silver beads and sterling silver were used.  The gorgeously translucent aqua opaline Czech glass rondelles radiate light beautifully when worn, as you can see in the photos.  They are faceted to provide subtle sparkle and have a light coating of an earthy Picasso finish on both ends.  The glowing opaline beads are capped on the top and bottom with leaf designed, lead free pewter bead caps.  Stacked above each aqua bead is a Thai Hill Tribes fine silver bead.  More pure than sterling silver, the beads with a swirled cut out design were individually created by Karen Hill Tribe craftsmen in the mountains of Thailand.  Two tiny sterling silver discs spacers separate each Thai bead from a 3 mm sterling silver bead.  Sterling silver French hook earwires finish the beautiful earrings.  Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the exquisite QUETZAL earrings are a perfect gift for the woman who loves unique artisan earrings with a Mesoamerican story.

*** The resplendent quetzal, a bird with long flowing iridescent green tail feathers, was venerated by the Aztecs, Mayans and other Mesoamerican peoples.  They viewed the bird as the “god of the air,” a symbol of goodness and light.  Rulers and some nobility wore headdresses made from quetzal feathers - the birds were sacred so were never killed for their plucked feathers.  Symbolically, headdresses connected the wearers to Quetzalcoatl, one of their most important gods.  Known as the Plumed Serpent, it was a combination of a resplendent quetzal and a rattlesnake.  Quetzalcoatl was considered a god of creation and also a god of the wind, learning and wisdom.  Almost all Mesoamerican cultures claim to be descended from Quetzalcoatl.

The resplendent quetzal is a bird of goodness and light.  Quetzalcoatl was considered a god of creation and also a god of the wind, learning and wisdom. Like regular copper, white copper is said to allow the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development.   Even though man made, glass carries the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication.  Pewter is believed to be very grounding, bringing the wearer back to reality. Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The one of a kind QUETZAL earrings were carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio. They will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag with tissue, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
