Pink Opal Sugar Skull Earrings, Day of the Dead Halloween Handmade Jewelry

Item Description

Perfect for Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) parties, Halloween wear - or for any time of the year you feel the need to wear skull jewelry, the handmade PINK SUGAR SKULLS earrings are very trendy and full of marvelous spooky fun!  The glowing earrings feature two-sided Czech glass beads, Czech crystals and Swarovski crystals.  The unique skull beads were created with a base of translucent pink opal glass that is positively radiant in the light.  A delightful sugar skull was impressed on both sides of the beads.  For an aged, folk art look, a metallic copper Picasso finish was added to highlight the incredible details of the floral eyes, an inverted heart shaped nose, the grinning mouth and any other recessed areas of the skull beads.  As you can see in the photos, the skulls are a bit different on each side. Since the sugar skull earrings are two sided, they look beautiful from any angle when worn.
All sugar skulls need a bit of sparkle so two types of crystals were used:  clear Czech crystals and dark rose pink Swarovski crystals.  Found just above the sugar skulls are glittering clear Czech crystals set in copper rondelles.  The seven clear crystals might be on the smaller side, but do they ever sparkle at each movement of the earrings!  To add even more sparkle and a touch of lovely color to complement the pink opal glass of the skulls, a faceted Swarovski crystal bicone in a rich “dark rose” pink color is snugged into the top of each rondelle.  Sterling silver French hook earwires with copper bead accents finish the earrings.  The PINK SUGAR SKULLS earrings were carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs for the woman who wants to add ghoulishly fun jewelry to her unique Dia de los Muertos or Halloween skull collection.

Historians estimate the traditions and rituals associated with Día de los Muertos date back 2,500 to 3,000 years to the indigenous cultures of Mexico. In most regions of Mexico, November 1st honors the passing of infants and children. known as Día de los Inocentes (Day of the Innocents). November 2nd is when the passing of adults is celebrated and is known as Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). On these days, family members and friends travel to cemeteries to clean the graves of the deceased.  Homage is payed to the souls with colorful ofrendas (altars) that are filled with offerings of favorite foods and beverages, pan de muerto (Day of the Dead breads), candies (often in the shape of skulls), candles, incense, cempazuchitl (wild marigolds), photos of the deceased and other items from the past. Family and friends may also tell stories, which are usually funny and lighthearted. Death is often mocked since it is accepted as part of everyday life. A departed loved one is mourned but the death is also celebrated with happiness and joy.

Skulls are believed to ward off evil and assure protection and well being.  Even though man made, glass and crystals carry the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication.  Copper is believed to allow the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development.  Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is believed to be a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The PINK SUGAR SKULLS  glass and crystal earrings were carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio. They will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag with tissue, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
