Petroglyph Cross Necklace Unakite Pipestone Southwest Handmade Jewelry

Item Description

If you love unique, meaningful cross jewelry, then the SOUTHWEST WHISPERS handmade cross pendant necklace is perfect for you!  The one of a kind necklace features a rustic Southwest petroglyph inspired cross, earthy unakite, vintage bauxite pipestone beads and sterling silver.  The beautiful cross was artisan designed and hand cast from lead free pewter here in the U.S..  The front of the cross is impressed with five Southwest petroglyph symbols: a dancing man representing life and possibly a fruitful hunt; a spiral sun representing life, the seasons and ascending; mountains representing abundance; a horse representing freedom and a journey; and, a deer representing plentitude.  The pendant was given a patina, which settled in the recessed petroglyph designs, and then polished to a mirror-like finish of old silver (hard to photograph without reflections).  The back of the pendant has the mark of the artist who designed the cross.  A heavy duty sterling silver jump ring attaches the petroglyph cross to the main body of the necklace.
To perfectly compliment the petroglyph cross pendant, earthy unakite and bauxite pipestone beads were used.  Unakite is a beautiful mottled gemstone, a form of granite composed of pink feldspar, green epidote and clear quartz.  As you can see in the photos, each stone is different, some almost all green, some almost all pink (more a salmon pink color) and some with a good combination of both.  Two sizes of unakite were used, the larger in the front and the smaller at the back.  They are in groups of three, to represent the Holy Trinity, separated by small sterling silver beads.  Between the first groupings of unakite at the front is found vintage bauxite pipestone beads, also in groups of three.  Bauxite is a mineral found in West Africa and has been used for centuries to create trade beads and carve pipes.  Since these beads were handmade, each one is different giving a wonderful rustic look.   Small sterling beads separate the bauxite pipestone beads from the unakite.  A sleek sterling silver toggle clasp securely finishes the necklace.  Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs, the SOUTHWEST WHISPERS necklace was created for the woman who adores wearing cross jewelry with a Southwest flair.

Crosses are a symbol of the atonement and reminds Christians of God's love in sacrificing his own son for humanity.  Pewter is believed to be very grounding, bringing the wearer back to reality.  Unakite is said to be a stone of  love, compassion and kindness; it is said to help balance the emotions. Bauxite Pipestone is said to help create an increase of feelings of happiness and heightened well being.  Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The unique SOUTHWEST WHISPERS cross pendant necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio.  The necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals.
