Mykonos Hamsa Hand of Fatima Artisan Earrings, Handmade Evil Eye Beaded Jewelry

Item Description

Looking as if they were discovered at an archaeological dig, the lovely FORTUNA earrings feature Mykonos hamsa charms with an antiqued green patina. Rustic turquoise colored Czech glass beads with a Picasso finish highlight the hamsa / hand of Fatima charms perfectly. Copper and sterling silver earwires finish the artisan made lovelies. Long and flirty, wear these stylish earrings with your favorite casual clothes on a friend filled get-together or during art gallery hopping. Long and flirty, the The FORTUNA earrings were carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs for the woman who loves to wear one of a kind jewelry. The unique, beaded earrings were named FORTUNA (Spanish for "fortune") since the hamsa symbol has long been used as a protection against evil.

  • Hamsa / hand of Fatima charms: app. 25 mm x 18 mm (at widest)
  • Rustic turquoise Czech glass beads: app 11 mm x 8 mm; faceted around the middle
  • Metal: pewter (charms), copper and sterling silver
  • Earwires: sterling silver French hooks with copper bead accents
  • Length: app. 2.5" / 6.4 cm measured from the top curve of the earwires

The hamsa charms used in the earrings were made in Mykonos, Greece, from lead free, food grade pewter with a copper covering.  To add an antiqued look, a turquoise green patina was applied to bring out the amazing detail of the swirls, spirals and small eye designs decorated all of the charms.  The back side of the charms are not decorated but have the patina.  The charms are very light and hardly add any weight to the earrings.  The design on these charms hearken back to the earliest form of the hamsa before a large eye design started to be included.

The beautiful hand symbol used in the FORTUNA artisan earrings has had many names over the centuries: the hamsa, the hand of Fatima, the eye of Fatima, the hand of Miriam and the chamsa.  In its simplest form, the symbol of the hamsa is a decorated hand ("khamsa" being the Arabic word for "five", a number identified with the fight against evil).  Later the addition of an "eye" became popular.  Many stories are told how the talismanic symbol came about, but all agree that it protects the wearer from evil and brings them goodness, abundance, fertility, luck and good health.

In keeping with the gorgeous color of the water that surrounds the Greek island of Mykonos, I decided to suspend the hamsa charms from turquoise colored Czech glass bead bicones.  The glass beads have a rustic feel to them because there are tiny pits in the glass (that you can't really see with your eyes, only with a close up lens) and a tan Picasso finish.  Because the Czech beads are faceted around the middle they give a bit of sublime sparkle to the FORTUNA earrings.  A 2 mm copper bead caps the top and bottom of each bead.

The hamsa charms were wire wrapped to a length of copper wire.  The top end was run through the holes of the Czech glass and copper beads and then carefully wire wrapped into a loop.  The loop was attached to sterling silver French hook earwires with copper bicone accents.

Pewter is believed to be very grounding, bringing the wearer back to reality. Glass carries the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication. Copper is said to allow the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development.  Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The FORTUNA handmade artisan earrings will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
