Kokopelli Necklace, Southwest Jewelry Red Coral Turquoise Magnesite

Item Description

Images of Kokopelli, a humpbacked flute player, date back over 3000 years ago when the first Anasazi petroglyphs were carved into rock faces and the icon painted onto pottery in the Desert Southwest. Today, Kokopelli can be found on a wide range of hand crafted items, such as this stunning KOKOPELLI necklace. The focal of the one of a kind necklace is an artisan hand cast pewter Kokopelli pendant with a raised design.  To add a Southwest flair to the unique necklace, rich red coral lantern shaped beads, sky blue turquoise magnesite, shimmering mother of pearl rondelles and sterling silver were used.  The KOKOPELLI necklace is eye catching when worn and will be treasured for many years, maybe even generations, to come. The necklace was carefully designed and created by Catherine of Shadow Dog Designs for the woman who loves artisan made Southwest inspired jewelry.

As was mentioned above the image of Kokopelli is an ancient one. The most familiar depictions of Kokopelli today are from Hopi art which were derived from ancient Anasazi glyphs. He is believed to be the harbinger of spring, bringing warmer weather by playing his flute while carrying a sack of seeds on his back. He also is a symbol of fertility, not only scattering seeds from the sack on his back, but also babies - many women of the village would find themselves pregnant when he passed through in the spring. Kokopelli was also known as a healer, a prankster and a storyteller.

The Kokopelli pendant was designed and individually hand cast in their hole studio by Nooma and Vincent of Inviciti.  The very detailed, Indian flute playing Kokopelli figure is raised from the background, giving a 3-D effect.  The pendant, which is lead and nickel free,  was given an aged patina and then polished to highlight Kokopelli.  The artisan pendant is attached to the main body of the necklace with a sterling silver jump ring.

The color combination of the KOKOPELLI necklace screams the Southwest.  Rich red coral hand cut into lantern shapes adds bright color to the design.  Glowing white mother of pearl rondelles are scattered throughout.  Lovely sky blue turquoise magnesite rounds were paired with the mother of pearl and also finish off the back of the necklace.  Small 2 mm sterling beads separate each grouping of beads and also add silver glitter.

To finish the KOKOPELLI handmade necklace, a sterling silver toggle clasp set was used.  Three pyramids of granulation can be found on the round part of the clasp, a beautiful finish to the necklace.

Kokopelli is believed to be the bringer of spring.  Pewter is said to be very grounding, bringing the wearer back to reality.  Red Coral is said to calm life, to restore harmony in the event of an emotional conflict. Mother-of-pearl is believed to stimulate intuition, sensitivity and imagination.  Turquoise Magnesite is said to help turn dreams into realities; it instills peace during meditation.  Silver is a metal of love and healing; it is a mirror to the soul, helping us to see ourselves as others see us.

The KOKOPELLI handmade necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio.  The necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
