Celtic Cross Necklace, Moss Agate St Patricks Day Handmade Jewelry

Item Description

Looking as if it might have been created in the time of St Patrick (or even before), the meaningful CALANAIS Celtic cross pendant necklace combines the look of old jewelry with the look of new.  The one of a kind necklace features a glowing, solid copper Celtic cross pendant, gorgeous moss agate gemstones and green Swarovski crystals.  Artisan handmade, the copper pendant has a very detailed Celtic cross that is raised against the background for wonderful texture.  A continuous, interlacing design (representing the interconnectedness and continuity of life) is found on all four arms of the cross and on the halo.  Because the pendant was made to look like an old wax seal stamp, it has a rustic look to it with intentionally uneven edges.  The back of the Celtic cross pendant is silky smooth.  A heavy duty copper jump ring securely fastens the pendant to the main body of the necklace.
Found throughout Ireland and Scotland, Celtic crosses predate Christianity and have roots in paganism - in pagan times, it was known as the sun cross or sun wheel.  According to popular legend, St. Patrick is first credited with using the Celtic cross to help convert the Irish pagans kings and others to Christianity, a combination of the Christian cross with the circle of light or halo of the pagan sun god.
Since it is said that 40 shades of green can be found in the Irish countryside, green moss agate gemstones and green Swarovski crystals were used to perfectly complement the Celtic cross pendant.  Moss agate is a form of translucent chalcedony with flowing filaments of chrome or iron that is suggestive of mosses and other plants.  As you can see in the photos, each round gemstone is different from the others, some very dark green, some much lighter green and some almost clear.  All have the mossy look - please take a look at photo # 8 for a close up of the gemstones.  Representing the Holy Trinity, the moss agate is divided in groups of three, separated by small copper beads.  To add sparkle and to separate the first three sets of gemstones, faceted Swarovski crystals were added, three on each side, in a color called “erinite,” a medium dusty green color.  The beautiful necklace is finished with a sleek solid copper toggle clasp set.  Carefully designed and handmade by Catherine of Shadow Dog designs, the CALANAIS necklace was created for the woman who adores Celtic crosses and loves to wear one of a kind jewelry - perfect for St. Patrick's Day or for any time of the year..    ***  The CLANAIS necklace is named for the Calanais Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, an ancient cross-shaped set of standing stones erected more than 5,000 years ago.

The Celtic Cross is a symbol of knowledge, strength and compassion.  The four arms are thought to represent: the four directions of the compass; the four elements (fire, earth, air and water); and, our mind, soul, body and heart while the center ring or halo is said to be a Celtic symbol for infinite love with no beginning and no end, a symbol of God’s endless love. Moss Agate is believed to encourage a sense of tranquility and emotional balance, helping the wearer to become closer to nature.  Even though man made, crystals (glass) carry the energies of transformation, rebirth and communication.  Copper is said to allow the wearer to recognize barriers in the path of personal development.

The CALANAIS artisan necklace was carefully designed and handmade in a dog friendly, smoke free studio.  The necklace will come with two informational drop tags: one with the piece's name; the other lists the materials used in the necklace and the language of the stones and metals. It will be carefully packed in an organza jewelry bag, perfect for gift giving to a loved one . . . or to yourself!
